Gauged Ear Repair

Ear gauging is a popular body modification that stretches the earlobe to sometimes more than an inch in diameter. It is fashionable and socially acceptable among younger people and falls along the same lines as tattoos and body piercings. As many young people leave school and begin to search for professional employment, they find that their ears can hinder them from finding a job. Repairing gauged ears is a relatively new procedure in the field of cosmetic surgery, but surgeons are successfully getting results that satisfy their patients.

Question:

My son is six and my husband and I are interested in having him get ear surgery. Would it be possible to stay with him during the procedure?

Answer:

While it may sound like a good idea, actually watching your child's surgery is often emotionally difficult. My team and i allow parents to be with the child until they go under anesthesia and then shortly after when they enter the recovery area. this usually more then balances the stress with the reward of being with your child that parents often seek.

Question:

I'm interested in otoplasty and I was wondering in what cases you use dissolvable sutures and when you use permanent sutures.

Answer:

I almost always use permanent sutures for cartilage shaping and dissolvable ones for the skin closure.

Question:

I've heard that prominent ears are sometimes caused by having no antihelix. What does this mean and how is it fixed?

Answer:

Normal ears have a fold called the "antihelix". Lack of this fold results in protuberance. During otoplasty the fold is recreated with special mattress sutures placed in the cartilage.

Question:

Will my son still be able to play contact sports after his otoplasty surgery?

Answer:

Yes. I do require that patients wear a head band around the ears for the first three months when doing these types of activities to prevent them from being pulled forward during the healing process.

Question:

I live in New Jersey but winter in West Palm Beach. I’m interested in having you do my otoplasty surgery. Is it possible to have you coordinate with my primary care physician in New Jersey for any follow-up appointments that would occur while I’m there?

Answer:

Patients commonly come from long distances for their surgeries and we routinely work with their local physicians.

Question:

I had otoplasty years ago and I feel that my ears have partially returned to their initial position. Is there some reason why this would occur and could I get another procedure done?

Answer:

Cartilage has "memory" and may in fact have some return to old shape.

Question:

I have some keloid scarring on my ears from piercings. Can these be removed, and how can I prevent them from coming back in the future?

Answer:

Ear lobe keloids are among the most vexing problems to treat due to their high propensity to recur. Surgery, lasers, radiation, topical chemotherapy, steroid injection and pressure clamps have all been tried with no one method being reliably effective

Question:

Is an overnight stay in the hospital required for children undergoing ear surgery?

Answer:

Typically not unless the child has some underlying health problem that requires more intense post anesthesia monitoring (heart/lung problems etc).
