Ethnic Rhinoplasty |
|
I'm an African American female. I've never liked that my nose is really big and seems like it would look better on a man (my brother has the same nose and it's fine on him). How can I make my nose look more feminine and smaller?
Rhinoplasty can help you address these issues with refinement and reduction.
I'm Iranian and I have a very Iranian looking nose. What bothers me most, though, is how the tip hangs down. How do you fix this?
Ptotic tips need to be supported in the proper position. This is done in a variety of ways including special sutures, columella strut grafts and lowering of the dorsal septum. An ethnic rhinoplasty procedure is designed to address facial concerns while maintaining your cultural distinctions.
I’m Asian American, from Ft. Lauderdale, and I would like to undergo rhinoplasty. Are there any specific risks associated with Asians?
No more then any other patient.
My father is Iranian and I've inherited his nose. I have a large hump and the tip hangs down very low. I imagine that removing the hump would make the tip hang even lower so how would this be addressed?
Good thought. your tip would be re supported with sutures or columella "struts" to sit in a pleasing position and not be left hanging.
I’m from Pompano Beach and I'm Greek. I have a horrible hump on my nose... very pronounced... plus the tip of my nose hangs very low. To be honest, my nose looks like the typical witch's nose. I want a normal looking nose and I imagine this will require some pretty drastic change. Can a drastic change still work with my features and look good and natural?
Absolutely! The art of rhinoplasty is balancing the nose with the rest of the face. One of the things that currently makes your nose look so bad to you is that it is probably way out of proportion to the rest of your face. During your consult we can do some computer imaging to show you the changes in your nose will be done to harmonize with your face.
I recently came across the term Westernization Rhinoplasty. Can you explain what this is?
Most often this refers to the attempt at turning an ethnic (African American, Latin, Asian) type nose into one that is Caucasian and Nordic in appearance.
I’m African American and considering rhinoplasty. Are there any risks that I should be aware of that are specific to African American patients?
From a technical point of view African Americans are at greater risk of having slightly more visible scars when nostril reduction is performed and not achieving enough tip refinement as desired due to thick skin. A more important issue is being able to decide and communicate how much ethnic identity to preserve or change with your surgery.
On the Real Housewives of New Jersey, one of the housewives looks like she’s had an obvious nose job, like the bridge of her nose is sort of concave now. Is this a common problem with rhinoplasty and how do you avoid it?
Tastes change over time and so do concepts of what is attractive. At one time the very "scooped" or concave bridge was considered desirable and sought after. Most patients today prefer a stronger more natural bridge. If a "scooped" appearance is not desirable to you then it is most important to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand and it can easily be avoided.
Are there any factors that make someone not a good candidate for revision rhinoplasty?
Unrealistic expectations would be my most significant cause. Otherwise thick, fibrotic, scarred skin and multiple previous surgeries would not portend a good result.
How is a retracted columella in an Asian patient fixed?
The same as in any patient. Septal extension or rim retraction is used.
