I've heard a lot of doctors say that the recovery following a facelift is about 5 to 10 days. My friend had a facelift and even after 2 weeks she really didn't feel that comfortable going out in public. Was her case unusual or is that common?
Your confusion is brought on the large number of branded procedures that are marketed as facelifts. Some mini lift procedures will have less than a week recovery, but a full deep face and neck lift could easily take two weeks or more. Your facelift recovery time depends on what your friend needed and had to get the result she wanted.
For a facelift do you suggest ‘twilight sleep’? What are the benefits as opposed to using general anesthesia?
The benefits of "twilight" or IV sedation are quicker recovery from the anesthesia. For patients with low anxiety levels and undergoing short to medium length procedures it is an excellent technique to use. Patients with higher anxiety and undergoing longer full facelifts or combined procedures are better off having general anesthesia.
I had a tummy tuck years ago and I loved the results. I've helped to maintain them by keeping in shape and eating well and doing regular abdominal exercises. I'm interested in getting a facelift and would like to know if there is anything afterward that I can do to help maintain the results similar to after my tummy tuck.
It's very wise of you to think ahead like that. A good skin care regimen and periodic targeted Botox and filler will enhance and prolong the results of your surgery.
Do you recommend that patients apply ice to the face after facelift? If so, how often and for how long should this be done?
Patients are instructed to apply cold packs for 20 minutes on then 20 off to each side while awake for the first 48 hours after surgery.
I've heard that new facelift techniques address the muscles of the face. What does this mean exactly and how is this done? Are the muscles being moved or altered?
It's not so much individual muscles themselves which are tightened but the complex layer of supporting fascia which invests itself on them. Tightening and lifting this layer provides the foundation for the skin to re-drape itself on. Without this step the skin's inherent elasticity will cause it to re-stretch in a short period of time if only skin lifting is performed.
I am 68-years-old and I am seeking a facelift procedure, but I live alone and my family lives at least an hour away from me. Is it possible to drive myself home after the facelift surgery?
You need to have help for the first 24-48 hours after this procedure. For patients in your situation we generally offer two options. You can be discharged home with a driver and nurse or aid who will stay with you until you are able to care for yourself. You can be transferred to a recovery facility which is like a hotel/spa where you will be cared for and pampered as well if you wish (massage, manicure etc.)
I'm interested in a necklift but I'm worried that afterward my rejuvenated neck will make my face look worse. Is it better just to get a full facelift and address both?
Yes that is usually the wiser choice. Even if you don't need major face work the whole result will be blended and enhanced and look better. Conversely if you don't do the face you may find that what doesn't seem to bother you now may become very noticeable and upsetting to you after.
I am very interested in getting a neck lift. I am a 38 year old female and the "turkey gobbler" seems to be very hereditary in my family regardless of weight. I am not over weight (very lean, actually) but mine is already starting to make its appearance. When I have this procedure done, will I have to have it again in later years?
This is often very rewarding to do in younger patients who have familial tendency for this. Usually face and neck lift surgery is done to turn back the clock. It doesn't stop it though. In your case at age 38 you are not turning back the clock to much so while you won't get the same turkey gobbler it's likely you'll need something again at age 58 or 60.
