Question:

Are Gore-Tex implants a good option if implants are needed for nose surgery?

Answer:

Many physicians never use implants because of the risk of infection and removal and only recommend your own cartilage. For those who do gore tex has been reported to be quite useful for profile augmentation when structural support is not needed. Gore tex " facial implants" are currently not available in the US and any surgeon who wishes to use it must fashion his own from generic gore tex sheeting.

Question:

Is there such a procedure as lip implants? And would they be a better option than injectable fillers?

Answer:

Lip implants are available. The advantage is in the permanent effect and elimination of need for repeat injections. The disadvantages are the same as with any implant-displacement, infection, unnatural feel etc.

Question:
I’ve been told that I will need an implant for my rhinoplasty. Are Goretex implants a good option?
Answer:
The use of alloplasts (synthetics) is an undecided issue in rhinoplasty. Many surgeons prefer to never use anything but the patients own cartilage or other tissue. Other surgeons throughout the world commonly use alloplasts without problem. There are many reports of successful use of gore tex as a dorsal augment. It's probably safe to say that it is ok as long as you understand that there is an increased risk of infection and need to remove the implant vs your own cartilage.

Question:

My chin is weak and makes my neck look larger than it should. Would a chin implant bring enough definition to my face, or should I also have a neck lift?

Answer:

Good question. These procedures are often complementary, not mutually exclusive. It would depend on your exam findings and what type of jaw neckline you were trying to achieve.

Question:

How common are problems with implants used in rhinoplasty? How often does extrusion or implant shifting occur?

Answer:

Statistics range from 3 to as high as 15-20 %. It may depend on where the implant is placed in the nose and what type it is (tip implants extrude much more then dorsal implants). While FDA approved and safe the use of a synthetic implant is a choice that each patient needs to make with the understanding that there are some advantages of shape and ease of access with them but also a higher risk of extrusion.

Question:

I am thinking about having a chin implant put in. What does the implant feel like for the patient? Will I get used to it quickly, or will it take a long time?

Answer:

You shouldn't feel much other than some firmness after all the healing is done. It usually takes about 6 weeks for patients to become completely acclimated.

What sort of complications are associated with facial implants and how are they treated?

Answer:

The main concerns with facial implants are infection or movement of the implant. Either of these usually requires removal and or replacement of the implant.
