Question:

I've heard a lot of doctors say that the recovery following a facelift is about 5 to 10 days. My friend had a facelift and even after 2 weeks she really didn't feel that comfortable going out in public. Was her case unusual or is that common?

Answer:

Your confusion is brought on the large number of branded procedures that are marketed as facelifts. Some mini lift procedures will have less than a week recovery, but a full deep face and neck lift could easily take two weeks or more. Your facelift recovery time depends on what your friend needed and had to get the result she wanted.

Question:

I have a “butt nose” that I would like repaired with rhinoplasty. There is a notch at the tip, almost like a cleft chin but in my nose. Will there be a lot of pain when I wake up? How long will my nose be sore for afterwards?

Answer:

These problems are caused by the shape and separation of your tip cartilages. Rhinoplasty will reshape and reposition them to give you a more refined tip. Most patients did not report significant pain from rhinoplasty but of course pain medicine is offered for comfort.

Question:

Where are the incisions located for ear surgery? Are they noticeable?

Answer:

Incisions are located in the crease behind your ears and are not visible. Take a look at some otoplasty before and after photos.

Question:

I had otoplasty 2 weeks ago.  I am not sure if this is just from the swelling or not, but my ears seem to look quite different from one another.  I don't feel any difference between the two as far as pain and sensitivity goes.  Have you seen the ears heal at different times before?  I hope this is not what their permanent position will be.

Answer:

At two weeks it's likely swelling but checking with your doctor would be the best approach to alleviate your concerns.

Question:

I had otoplasty several months ago. From the start of my recovery, I seemed to have more side effects in one ear than the other and now I'm noticing that that ear doesn't lay as close to my head as the other. Is this something be concerned about? Will they appear more even over time?

Answer:

It is not uncommon for one ear to be a little more set back then the other and it should not be considered a problem or complication.

Question:
Since my nose job six months ago, I feel the bridge of my nose is too high and I want it lowered. A rib graft was used to raise the height. What can fix this?
Answer:
You will have to have the graft shaved down. I would wait another six months before proceeding with this.

Question:

The tip of my nose after my rhinoplasty seems really high. It’s only been a week, so will it eventually drop? When can I expect this to happen?

Answer:

This is normal at a week. You are going to see some change at the end of a month.

Question:

My neck looks really lumpy since my necklift. Is this just part of healing and will it get better?

Answer:

If you are early in your post op course then it probably will. If you are a year or more out then I would advise discussing it with your surgeon.

Question:

I’m 8 months post op from rhinoplasty and not happy with my results. How soon after surgery can I consider a revision procedure?

Answer:

While there is no set rule I usually want patients to wait a year from their last surgery to allow complete healing before considering revision. This is important so that areas of concern are not over or under corrrected.

Question:

Is it normal for the nasal tip to be hard after rhinoplasty?

Answer:

The tip will be quite firm for up to a year after rhinoplasty especially if an open approach or tip grating was used.
