Septorhinoplasty |

What causes a crooked appearance in the nose? Is this always caused by a nasal fracture?
Most commonly it is a deviated septum that drives the crooked look. This may be due to trauma but sometimes is just the way it grows. Crooked bones though are almost always from trauma.
Would it be unwise for me to have a rhinoplasty if I have severe allergies and sinus issues?
A good rhinoplasty should not affect your breathing in a negative way. If necessary, functional surgery can be added to enhance it.
Is alar base reduction the correct technique for improving flared nostrils? How is this performed?
Alar base reduction can be used to improve flaring or nostril width. It can be done with tissue removal from the nostril sill, rim or some combination of both.
I have a very crooked nose that I would like to have fixed. I've heard that it can be made straighter but that correcting a crooked appearance is very difficult and that I cannot expect it to be perfectly straight. Why is this?
Crooked noses are more of a challenge to correct. There are a number of reasons for this ranging from cartilage memory to previous trauma. Special maneuvers are needed to help maintain the correction. Despite this some deviation may recur or persist. This can happen because of inherent asymmetry to the face or cartilage memory.
My allergies are really bad. They seem worse this year than ever before. I'm constantly sneezing and blowing my nose. I'm wondering if this will affect my upcoming rhinoplasty or the recovery in any way.
You will be more comfortable if you get them under as much control as possible before your surgery.
When you do a rhinoplasty on a long nose, are you literally removing nasal tissue? Does this affect breathing in the nose?
Although it is sometimes hard for patients to visualize, rhinoplasty does not involve removal of visible nasal tissue. The only exception to this occurs in the nostril base area if this needs to be significantly narrowed. The shape changes come from altering the underlying bone and cartilage structure, sometimes removing, sometimes adding and almost always reshaping. Preventing airway problems is always a part of the operative plan.
What is septorhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the procedure which changes the external appearance of the nose and is most often done for cosmetic reasons. Septoplasty is the procedure to repair a deviated nasal septum which is an internal nasal procedure and is most often done for functional (breathing) reasons. When both are done at the same time it can be referred to as "septorhinoplasty".
