Question:

My rhinoplasty was 8 weeks ago. The swelling has gone down from my bridge and that looks great but my nasal tip is still very, very swollen. Is it likely at this point that I'll need revision rhinoplasty to refine the tip? Does swelling generally remain in the tip longer?

Answer:

This is very normal especially if your surgeon used an open rhinoplasty approach. Your tip will look a lot different in 6 months. Don't think about revision right now.

Question:

How common is bleeding after rhinoplasty and how much of a concern is it?

Answer:

Some bloody nasal drainage is normal for the first 24-48 hours after rhinoplasty. Active bleeding that requires an intervention is very uncommon.

Question:

I’ve heard of mini facelifts referred to as weekend facelifts. Can you really recover within just a weekend?

Answer:

Minilifts are not one size fits all. It depends on how much you actually need to have done. Some people can recover in this short period. Most should allow up to a week.

Question:
I am an actor seeking a nose job to improve my marketability in the theatre industry. I need to know how fast I would be able to be back on the stage and looking good. How long does a typical full recovery take?
Answer:
Although you can be seen at ten days, for what you are describing it would be best to allow yourself a month to be “looking good”.

Question:

I am 18-years-old and a high school senior. I want to have a rhinoplasty during my spring break in March, but I have a big dance to go to in April. Will my scars heal by that time? And would I have to wear the dressing for my nose longer than the two week duration of my break?

Answer:
Many patients do this during their school breaks. You won’t have any bandages but you will still have swelling.

Question:

I’ve heard that bleeding during surgery is what leads to bruising in the recovery. How do you minimize bleeding during surgery?

Answer:

Surgery of all kinds is a controlled "trauma" to the body and that is what causes bruising. Bleeding is controlled with careful technique, medicines to control blood pressure and constrict blood vessels.

Question:

I run daily and am wondering how soon after surgery I can get back to my regular active routine? What are the concerns of doing too much too soon?

Answer:

You need to ease back into it week by week. Excess lifting or straining can cause bleeding. Swelling will worsen as well. If you have had an "osteotomy" as part of your procedure it takes 4-6 weeks for the bones to set-heaven forbid you bang yourself or fall and push them out of place before that!

Question:

My skin since my rhinoplasty has been very dry. How soon after surgery can I resume my normal facial care regimen and when can I use exfoliants and masks?

Answer:

I let my patients use gentle cleanser (cetaphil) and moisturizer right after splint removal. Exfoliants and masks should wait for 6 weeks.

Question:

Its now several weeks since my rhinoplasty. When I first had the cast removed, I was very pleased with the result. But since then the swelling seems to have actually increased. Is this normal?

Answer:

Don't worry you'll get what you saw originally when the cast was removed. The cast or splint applies compression to the nose and it is not uncommon that after removal without compression the nose swells more. eventually this will subside. Some patients do better by applying paper tape to the nose at night to give it some compression to speed the process. Ask your doctor if that is smoething he or she recommends.
