What is a Facelift?

The facelift, also known as a deep plane face and neck lift, is a plastic surgery procedure which can completely rejuvenate the mid face, lower face, and the neck. By correcting sagging facial skin, jowls, and loose neck skin, the result is a more refreshed and youthful appearance. This cosmetic procedure provides dramatic yet natural and long-lasting results. Good candidates for a face and neck lift include healthy men and women who are looking to improve significant face and neck sagging with redundant skin, fat, and muscle.

The current popular trend, which has been greatly influenced by the media, is for patients to avoid the "facelift" and instead try to fit themselves into some named wonder procedure. These procedures of the moment often promise miracle rejuvenation in an hour or less with no downtime or discomfort.

Dr. Schwartz encourages patients to carefully consider what will give them the best value for their money and the most satisfaction in long term results. It is often far better to take a little more time to recover and spend a little more now to achieve a far superior and longer lasting result as opposed to chasing a "fad" procedure or technology that will only require you to do something again in a year or, worse, repair an untoward result.

What is the Procedure for a Facelift?

During a facelift, the surgeon starts by making an incision around the hairline. The incision is made beginning near the temple within the hairline and curves around the earlobe. All layers of the face and neck are lifted and repositioned. Then, the doctor separates the skin from fat and muscle. If there is a lot of fat, then some of it may be suctioned out to give the face a smoother look. There is a layer of tissue under the skin that the surgeon tightens. In order to do this, they pull it back and fold it over. Afterwards, the skin is placed back in its rightful area. The surgeon finishes by closing the incisions with stitches or sutures. Dr. Schwartz performs face and neck lifts at an outpatient surgical center using IV sedation or general anesthesia. The surgery takes about four hours to complete.

What is the Recovery Time for a Facelift?

Recovery after the a face and neck lift procedure takes about one week. Patients may experience some minor discomfort which can be treated with medication. Bruising and swelling may also occur. The stitches are removed in about one week. Most patients can return to work within two weeks, though more strenuous activities should be postponed for about three weeks.

Who is a Candidate for a Facelift?

A facelift is an individualized procedure. It is a cosmetic surgery procedure for both men and women. The best candidates are patients who have signs of facial aging. However, they still need to have some skin elasticity. The ideal candidates are between 40 and 70 years old. They must be in good physical and mental health. The procedure is not good for people who smoke. Therefore, smokers are asked to break the habit for two weeks before the surgery. After the procedure patients are also required to stop smoking for a couple of weeks to aid with healing.

What are the Benefits of a Facelift?

Facelifts are beneficial because they can turn the clock back. The procedure is meant to make a person look and feel years younger. During the process, the surgeon repairs any loose and sagging skin. Not only that, but they also tighten the facial muscles. Additionally a facelift is beneficial because it improves facial contour. For instance, it can make a person's lower eyelids appear more youthful. With today's advanced technology, the incisions are hidden in the hairline. The procedure can even smooth a person's neck.
