Plastic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic treatments are on the rise among men. In 2016, men had more than 1,300,000 procedures performed, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s an increase of 28 percent from 2000. The increased interest in plastic surgery from men, including non-surgical options like Botox, has led to a rise in interest in what some are calling the “Daddy Makeover.”

What is a Daddy Makeover?
You’ve probably heard of a Mommy Makeover, which some women get to restore their body to it’s pre-pregnancy size and shape. A Daddy Makeover is similar, except it usually focuses on different areas of the body since men don’t get pregnant and breast feed. In fact, a large number of men seek out non-surgical treatments for their “makeover,” such as Botox to reduce crow’s feet and frown lines or injectable fillers to reduce other types of wrinkles.
Men who want plastic surgery are usually looking at procedures that can help take a few years off of their appearance or help them look more masculine. Rhinoplasty was the exception as it was the most popular facial plastic surgery among male patients in 2016. Guys who want to remain competitive at work or look more youthful to help advance their careers are also likely to have a facelift, eyelid lift, or both, performed.
Signs You’re a Candidate for a Daddy Makeover
There are a few factors that determine whether or not a Daddy Makeover is right for you. One incredibly important factor is your overall health. Since plastic surgery is an elective procedure and isn’t without its risks, your surgeon will likely ask you to have a medical exam beforehand. During your exam, let your doctor know if you have any chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or if you have a history of any illnesses. You’ll also want to let your doctor know about any medicines you take.
While having some bad habits won’t necessarily take you off of the candidate list for plastic surgery, your surgeon should still know if you smoke or drink a lot. You’ll be asked to quit smoking at least two weeks before the surgery and to avoid smoking or using tobacco for a few weeks afterward.
It’s also important to have realistic expectations for any surgeries you’re having and to understand what a procedure can and can’t do. For example, a facelift will help reduce sagging in the lower area of your face and can take about 10 years off of your appearance. But it won’t stop the clock or keep you from aging.
Additionally, while you might notice a boost of confidence after your procedures, which might help you at work or home, it’s important not to expect a miracle from your Daddy Makeover. Feeling more confident about your appearance can help you get ahead, but it won’t be the sole reason why you land a promotion.
How to Choose Procedures
How you choose which procedures to include in your Daddy Makeover depends on your overall goals and, in some cases, the degree of aging you’ve experienced. If you want to look younger and have significant sagging in the lower area of your face, a facelift might be the best option for you. If you also have some drooping in the eyelids or tired-looking eyes, you might combine a facelift with an eyelid lift.
If your goal is to create a more masculine appearance or to better balance your facial features, rhinoplasty to change the shape and size of your nose might be appropriate. Some men who think they have an overly large nose find that a chin augmentation helps to bring symmetry and balance to their features.
Finally, if you’re not ready to commit to anything too permanent, have very faint wrinkles or just want to test the waters, a non-surgical Daddy Makeover, involving Botox or a liquid facelift, may be the best choice for you.
