Im a 57 year-old man and Ive been considering getting a facelift. Since the facial skin is repositioned, how does this affect the appearance of the sideburns? How do you keep them from looking unnatural?
There are definitely some technique modifications for men. The upper sideburn and hairline can be preserved with what is called a “pretrichial” incision. The area of non hair bearing skin between the ear and lower sideburn/beard is preserved by moving the incision from within the ear to in front of it. These maneuvers will usually produce terrific outcomes. Even though it might seem that incsions would be more visible the preservation of normal landmarks and contours allows a far superior effect than more hidden incisions with distortion. Unfortunately there is still almost always the transfer of some beard hair bearing skin to behind the ear and neck. This can be handled post operatively with laser hair removal.
