When you decide to have facial plastic surgery, whether it’s rhinoplasty, a facelift, or another procedure, you’re making the decision to invest in yourself. Surgery comes with a higher price tag than less invasive options and also typically means more of a time commitment on your part. The biggest upside is that results from surgery often last much longer than the results you would get from a non-surgical or minimally invasive alternative.
Knowing what you can do to prolong your surgical results can help you enjoy the benefits of your procedure for as long as possible.
Cut Out Harmful Habits
Certain habits have a way of speeding up the aging process, which can have a negative effect on your appearance and on your surgical results. For example, smoking is one of the leading causes of wrinkles and signs of facial aging.
If you smoked before your surgery, it’s very likely that you had to take a break from the habit for a few weeks before and after. Why not use that break as an opportunity to cut out the habit for good? If you take up smoking again after surgery, you’ll in some ways be undoing the results of the procedure.
While drinking alcohol doesn’t have the same exact effects as smoking, it does dry out the skin and can make you look older, especially if you drink to excess. You don’t have to give up your twice-a-week or so glass of wine, but it can be worth your while to limit the amount you drink to make the most of your results.
Limit Sun Exposure
Like smoking, the sun’s UV rays are another major cause of wrinkles and other signs of aging. Minimizing your sun exposure by wearing a sunscreen daily and by limiting the time you spend outdoors when the sun is at its most intense, will help you to prolong your results.
It’s particularly important that you reduce sun exposure right after surgery when your skin is still healing from the procedure. Incision sites and wounds are very susceptible to damage from the sun. If you aren’t careful, the incision site can become dark or discolored, making scarring more visible.
Improve Your Diet
What you eat has a direct effect on how you feel and how well your body performs. While certain foods won’t reverse aging or make you look younger, there are foods that are thought to accelerate aging. For example, sugars and starches might play a role in the formation of wrinkles and other signs of aging. If you can, limit the amount of sweets and simple carbs in your diet.
Making sure you get plenty of antioxidants, minerals and other vitamins in your diet is also a good idea if you want to maintain youthful looking skin for as long as possible. The same is true for getting enough healthy fats and lean protein. Remember that collagen, the substance that helps to keep skin firm and smooth, is a type of protein.
Your diet might not need a complete overhaul, but it can be worth it to focus on eating more whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins rather than quick-and-easy processed foods and meals.
Get Maintenance Treatments
Depending on the surgery you choose, results can last for a decade or even longer. That doesn’t mean that your face won’t continue to age, though. Additionally, different parts of your face, that weren’t affected by surgery, might begin to show their own signs of aging.
One way to handle time marching on is to consider non-surgical treatments to maintain your results or to “touch up” results as needed. For example, if you had a surgical facelift, a liquid facelift several years down the line might be what you need to minimize any lines or wrinkles that have developed in the meantime.
If you had a brow lift, Botox injections to smooth frown or forehead lines might help to prolong your surgery results.
In addition to non-surgical, in-office treatments, taking good care of your skin at home might allow you to enjoy the results of your facial plastic surgery for as long as possible. Your plastic surgeon can make recommendations about the types of cleansers and other skincare products to try.
