What exactly does it mean when a person is going to have nasal packing?
It means you chose the wrong doctor. While a common and accepted practice the use of gauze or tampons to fill the nostrils and nasal passages after surgery is one of the worst experiences a patient can have. You can’t breathe through your nose, have a constant sense of pressure and headache and feel considerable pain on removal. The purpose is to either prevent bleeding or help support the repair. I have not used nasal packing in patients for 15 years. I employ techniques which do not not require it and spare both the patient and myself considerable pain.
