While it’s still a little early for me to be scheduling anything, I think it’s safe to say that I’ll want to have a facelift and probably a neck lift within the next few years. I’m currently 52 and I’m experiencing some sagging and hanging in those areas. I don’t really have the time now but when things slow down a bit this is something I plan to do for myself. Now I’m in research mode. There are so many plastic surgeons out there I want to make sure I choose someone who is extremely qualified. What board certifications should I be looking for in a surgeon? Should I ask for referrals from patients? Is there some kind of database I can go to to evaluate a surgeon’s expertise and qualifications?
There are many websites and databases. Start with the official sites of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and American Board of Plastic Surgery to get names of board certified surgeons in your area. Fom that you can verify their credentials, and training through state medical board sites. You will also be able to see if they have hospital priveliges (a good sign for a trained surgeon as opposed to someone who can only do procedures in their office) and if there are any safety or practice issues regarding the surgeon. Patients can be a good source but will be biased by the result they have had. No surgeon hits a home run every time up.
